Welcome to our shared blog!

Dear Mr. Knebel and class,
I hope you enjoy the book we chose to read for our shared reading.  My class is going to start reading the book aloud this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  We'll read pages 1-49.  You read it too.  On Monday, we'll write a summary and a reaction.  Then you post and tell us what you think on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
Then Wed-Friday, we can all read pages 53-84.  This time Mr. Knebel's class can write the summary and reaction.  Then we will tell you what we thought of the pages and your ideas.

Can't wait to hear if you like the book.

  2. Dear Mr. Knebel and class,
We started reading Edward Tulane. Edward is a rabbit who is made of china. He is about three feet tall from his tips of his ears to his toes. He is very vain because he only likes himself and no one else. He has very nice clothes made of silk, and he even has real leather shoes. The other characters in the story are Abilene, Edward's mistress. She is very sweet and kind to him, but he doesn't love her. She is about ten years old. Pelegrina is her grandmother who gave Edward to her for her 7th birthday. She has two parents. They are rich and live in a big house on Egypt Street. We will write more on Tuesday after we have read the rest of the pages. We'll let you know what happens in the story.

  3. We just read Edward Tulane to page 49. We hope you are enjoying the book. In the selection of pages, we met the main characters: Abiline, Edward, her mom and dad and her grandma. They lived on Egypt Street. The Grandma, Pelegrina, told Abilene about a beautiful princess who loved only herself. She wanted to teach Edward a lesson. After that, the neighbor's dog came in and grabbed Edward. He was very mad to be slobbered on and to get put away with the regular dolls. Next, they decided to go on a sea voyage to England. On the ship, two boys took Edward away from Abilene and were teasing her. Finally, Edward felt his first true emotion when he was thrown overboard. He was afraid. We can't wait to hear what you were thinking as you were reading this selection of pages. Your friends in Spring Valley Colony School.

  5. We thought the reading was very interesting. Edward had a very easy life, custom made clothes, and was well taken care of. That all changed when he was was thrown overboard. We are excited to see what happens to him next.

  6. Edward sure has had an intresting adventure so far. At least he is not stranded on the ocean floor any more. His new owner Nellie seems pretty excited to own Edward. I don't know haw excited edward is to be called Susanna. Should be intresting to see what adventure Edward has next.

  7. Hi Mr. Knebel and class,
We thought that Edward didn't like being called Susanna either, but at least he had a home with nice dresses. Lolly, Nellie's daughter, seemed like a mean person. We think that is why Nellie was kind of a sad lady. We are glad that Edward (Susanna) made her happy for a while.
We noticed that already Edward is starting to think about others besides himself. For the first time, he felt saddness when Lolly threw him in the garbage and he knew he would never see Nellie and Lawrence again. He is changing his personality.
We think this story has an important message for us to think about.

How much school do you guys have left??? We are done on May 18th at lunch!!!! :-)

  8. Hi Friends.
We just read to page 150. What happened was Edward was kicked off the train and so he left Bull and his dog, Lucy. He landed next to the railroad tracks and rolled down a hill. He was found by an old woman who turned him into a scare crow. Then he met Bryce who took him off the pole and home to his sister, Sarah Ruth. Sarah Ruth, who was four years old and very sick, loved Edward very much. She had a disease called Tuberculosis, we think. After six months, Sarah Ruth started to cough blood and it was harder and harder for her to breathe. Then Sarah Ruth died, her father took her away to bury her, and Bryce ran away to Memphis. He used Edward as a doll to dance while he played his harmonica. Then people would put money in the button box.

As we were reading, we were thinking about the buttons. They must have belonged to their mother and this was all they had left from her. We also were thinking about what a wonderful caring brother Bryce was for Sarah Ruth. No one could have loved her more in her short life.
We wonder what happened to their mom. Did she die from tuberculosis, too? And we also wonder why the dad is so mean to the kids when they need him so much.
Our question for you to answer is how has Edward's character changed from the beginning of the story until now? We can't wait to hear your answer.
